Ahoy! I have good news and bad news.

If you look in dark crevices of the beach club you’ll find its now home to a new crew of pirates. Pirates that will take your kids (age 4 and up) off your hands for three hours, and they promise to keep them from walking the plank.

I mentioned the new activity briefly, but have more feedback to give.

Your kids will yell “shiver me chicken tenders!” as the pirates feed them a full meal.

They’ll go on a REAL HUNT in dark waters. So be prepared to sign a liability waiver.

But I guarantee they will have an amazing time. If not, the pirates will find you wherever you are and ask you to pick up your kids early. Worried they will be taken by Captain Hook, who definitely makes an appearance? Totally normal.

The bad news is, well, that this swashbuckling experience has replaced the kids activity room. It’s gone and sorely missed. There is no longer a room to stop in at the Beach/Yacht to down activity if it’s raining or if everyone hash had a longish day.

The only activities take place in the pool area and occasionally around the campfire. If you mention something about this to cast members, many of them will also express their disappointment with the lack of a kids club room.

Wondering what people are doing when they walk up to cast members with their hands outstretched?

Wonder what is going on? It’s Disney Pin Trading: the buying, trading and collecting of collectible Disney pins featuring disney characters, events, attractions, icons and other elements.

People can buy pins as souvenirs at Disney. They can also trade them. Apparently, in 1999 pin trading was introduced and it has become almost a competitive sport ever since.

Pin Trading Etiquette, as per Disney:

Pins must be official Disney pins bearing the “©Disney” mark.
• Guests can make up to 2 pin trades per cast member per day.
• Pins must be exchanged for pins only and nothing else.
• For safety, trade one pin at a time, from flat open hand to flat open hand with pin backs attached.
• Refrain from touching anyone’s pins or lanyards. Always ask for a closer look if needed.
• Pins should be in good condition and undamaged.
• Have fun!

Cast members will always trade pins.

OE – Open Edition. This refers to pins that have several copies available.
LR – Limited Release. These pins are slightly harder to find.
LE – Limited Edition Size. These pins are very hard to find, with only a limited number made.
Grail – This is the pin that you’d love to get, but can’t seem to find. The “Unicorn” of pins.

Does another guest want to trade with you? Feel free to say “NO.”

Probably not. Let’s face it. The songs are not as catchy as the first movie. There is only one, Aurora – Into the Unknown:

Maybe we’ll sing along to this one. But is it worth going to the movies AGAIN to see the second sing along version. Only if you have absolutely nothing to do in the house, including laundry – which I always have. Thinking of getting your teeth pulled? Maybe do that first.

Yet, it is playing in theaters as we speak. And only for a select time, folks!! It looks to me is that they just added words whenever there is a song – so that your toddlers can READ along, right? Give me a break.

I guess some things really do never change. Maybe Disney will be selling their new Frozen Karaoke machines in theaters too, it wouldn’t surprise me.

But, if you still haven’t gone into the unknown and seen Frozen II, don’t let this stop you. It really is worth watching.

Anyone hoping that Disney Hollywood Studios will now revamp their Frozen Sing Along, now that really would be great.

Mickey. Mouse was born on November 18th and our own mouse was born just two days later.. on November 20th.

Not only does this mean being thrust into a world of all nighters and dirty diapers with no time to update this website – but it means we now need to make room for baby on our trip next month. Now that I am feeling back to normal, I decided to share some of our plans to make room for baby without a lot of stress.

First things first – update our flight itinerary

While most babies fly free as a lap child, you need to let the airline know so that they can reflect the additional passenger. You also should usually be prepared with your child’s birth certificate (a copy is fine) as your child will not yet have proper identification. While the rest of your family can usually print out or scan their boarding passes from home, you and the baby will have to formally check in at airline registration so that they can check id and give you a boarding pass.

Worried about feeding the baby in transit? Don’t be. Formula, breast milk and juice in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters are allowed in carry-on baggage and do not need to fit within a quart-sized bag. Separate formula, breast milk and juice from other liquids, gels and aerosols limited to 3.4 ounces. If bringing a breast pump, do not scan it through the X-ray machine just to be safe, separate it with the rest of your electronics.

You should also be able to walk through security with your child without having to go through the X-ray machine. Generally babies and X-rays don’t mix.

Another tip? Try and Book a Direct Flight. As hard as this might be at peak traveling times, try and book a direct flight to avoid “settling in” with baby too many times. Once is hard enough.

Do you have an expensive stroller? Consider buying a cheaper one for the plane. Strollers usually have to be checked. And can often be damaged in transit. We decided to plan and go with this Babytrend stroller. At $80 the price was right. While you could try and check stroller in in advance. if you are traveling with multiple kids I would suggest checking the stroller in at the gate, right when you board the plane.

Finally, bring plenty of activities and a comfortable feeding/traveling pillow. Playing cards and anything with distractions will hopefully keep you and the baby happy and quiet throughout the entire trip. And please, don’t forget the diapers.

Customers may carry on one diaper bag and government-approved child seat, in addition to the maximum carry-on baggage allowance. United Airlines also accepts one stroller or one car seat as checked baggage — free of charge — for each childtraveling on the flight

If you plan in advance your trip can be smooth and pain free, trust me.

It’s finally happening! Disney’s $7 rival to Netflix will stream movies, shows and originals from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and its own studio, plus a library of classics. (Netflix will now be working full time to come up with more original content). Does this mean we can throw out our Disney DVD’s? Will all the classics just stream from now on?

Disney Plus will include all of Disney’s family-friendly content and much of its mass-audience fare — basically, anything made for audiences up to a PG-13 rating. It’ll have content from Disney proper, Marvel, Lucasfilm (so, Star Wars), Pixar and National Geographic. Looking for FOX shows?  it’ll also offer all 30 seasons of The Simpsons.

There will be original marvel and Star Wars shows and movies – but they won’t come out all at once the way they do on Netflix, they will come out weekly.

Disney Streaming will play on Amazon Fire TV, XBOX, Play Station 4, Apple TV, Samsung TV, LG TV and has a deal with Verizon to give the carrier’s wireless and internet customers one full year FREE!

Here is a list of the movies that should be available right away at launch, to mean, this means no more buying DVD’s:

Looking for a few last minute Disney costumes and can’t find them on Amazon? There are still a few at Costco, at $29.99 they are a steal compared to the online prices. Among them this year? Little Bo Peep from this year’s Toy Story.

Do you have an old pair of rabbit ears? If not, can you grab a headband and make some ears? Grab a Red Jacket, Tan shirt, and Gray pants and you are all set to be the White Rabbit. No pocket watch? No problem! Make a large clock face on a piece of cardboard.

Do you have a yellow skirt lying around? Snow White’s signature look is all about color blocking. Pair it with some black shoes, a red headband and white shirt. Walk around with an extra large apple. Even without the blue sweater and seven dwarfs people will know you to be the cheerful princess.

Do you wear glasses? If not, run to the drug store and buy a pair of cheap black frames (pop out the prescription lenses). Then, all you need is to outfit yourself in Black and carry a really long cigarette.

Grab your umbrella and carpet bag! Then all you need is a bow tie, a hat with a flower and some black soot for your cheeks.

Although Maleficent is labelled the mistress of evil there is really only one Evil Queen in this movie: Michelle Pfeiffer. While she is definitely evil, an actress such as Pfeiffer could certainly have expanded her mean girl role a bit.  At 61, she still looks amazing but I would have liked her to have done more as the evil queen.  She and Angelina are definitely powerful enemies and a fitting match! But they should have had more time on the screen together.

I still can’t figure out what kingdom it’s supposed to be, as there was no mention of this kingdom in the first movie. It was never made clear. At the beginning of the movie, we have fast forwarded five years after the first Maleficent story. A new actor plays Prince Phillip,  Although they meet very formally as friends, it becomes clear that he has been dating Queen Aurora, Queen of the Moors. A wedding is set into play.  It turns out that Aurora left her original castle to the people and never looked back. Kind of strange way of tying it all together.

Thinking they will be waltzing once upon a dream? Think again.

Although it starts off as a fairytale, this isn’t your average fairytale. It quickly becomes action packed, with both Maleficent’s and fairy lives at risk. One of the best parts? Maleficent learns more about her ancestry, which is really really eye catching.

And of course, there are hints of the original Sleeping Beauty Tale, more so in this version than the first.

Kid factor: nothing permanently scarring. One scary scene. No foul language. If your kids saw the first movie they are probably okay to see the second. It is not your average kids Disney movie.

Getting Cooky with the Addams Family

The first horror family of the big screen re-VAMPed their look this weekend in a new 3-D animated feature film.

While originally concerned that this might not be the best movie for young kids, I quickly realized as the movie went on that this movie was ONLY a movie for young kids. Kids love the mysterious and spooky Addams family and can relate to Wednesday’s adventure into unknown Junior High.

Adults, however, can sit and try and close their eyes, until snapping inevitably wakes them up.

Luckily for the adults, even though the Addams family original sitcom ran for 64 episodes in 1964, this movie is only an hour and a half long. Adults might be more interested in recognizing the detailed animation, which is very close to the original Charles Addams cartoons.

Definitely good for the kids, though!

Wondering what lies OUTSIDE of Disney? Wondering if anything exists besides Disney? Florida does have more than theme parks. But for today we will discuss the OTHER theme park, the one that is just a few miles away from Disney, and can often be reached in just fifteen minutes.

Of course, staying at Universal is quite easy. If you were to stay at Universal (just as if you were staying at Disney), a free shuttle would take you to one of the three Universal theme parks: Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay. That would mean you would be investing in a Universal vacation and abandoning Disney altogether (and here, we don’t recommend that – there is just too much fun to be had!).

If staying at Disney, you can rent a car and drive it to Universal (not my recommendation) or take an Uber, Lyft, or shuttle. The average uber/lyft cost from Disney World to Universal’s drop off point is about $18. Mears Transportation will shuttle you from your hotel to Universal and back for $21. Pickup and return times are at your convenience. To schedule a shuttle, call 855-463-2776. Just remember that the shuttle appears to possibly be more expensive as it is Per Person.

Another factor? The age of kids/adults who are planning the trip. Not all the rides at Universal are appropriate for young kids. In fact, most people say it’s best to be 8+ to enjoy everything that Universal has to offer. Disney seems to be most appropriate for ALL ages, including the very young and the very old.

That being said, the Universal Studios child switch program goes well beyond a shorter wait time with wonderful child switch rooms. Located near the ride entrances of several ‘big kid’ attractions with height requirements of at least 40 inches (think: Spider Man, Fast and Furious, Harry Potter Escape from Gringotts, Reign of Kong and several others), these rooms have TVs and cozy seating. One parent can comfortably wait here with the little kids while the other enjoys the ride.

That being said, Universal is much easier to get around for families. You can easily walk around all three theme parks without having to take shuttles, trains, boats or skylines.  The choice is yours!

Why does Disney Like ‘Em Apples So Much?

Has anyone else noticed the bag of Disney apples at Costco? The organic Galas with the Mickey designs? What is it with Disney and Apples?

Does an apple a day keep the doctor away? Or will it possibly put you in a sleep-like death?

The Poison Apple is blood red and magic,  which, when bitten, will send its victim into the Sleeping Death. One who eats the Poison Apple A victim will only be revived by love’s first kiss. It is used by the Witch in an attempt to get rid of Snow White, in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is also well-known as her trademark object.

The Poison Apple is also used in House of Mouse, and labelled “Sleeping Apples”. It has been used in Enchanted, Once Upon a Time, Descendants and Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Now, wherever we go, when we see an apple, we think “be careful, it could be poison”. … and it very well might be, so be careful.
