Do you remember my inner turmoil when I learned of the upcoming movie, Mary Poppins Returns? If not, click here.
You have no reason to worry about doing harm to the Original Mary Poppins by attending Mary Poppins Returns. This film is not a remake. It is a sequel in every shape and form. And there may very well be more sequels to come.
I may be living in a bubble, but I was consistently shocked while watching the film. Almost as shocked as the Banks children watching Mary Poppins pull items out of her famous carpetbag. Shocked not only that Angela Lansbury is still alive and well at age 93, but she soars as an iconic character from the original P.L Travers eight book series: the balloon lady. Her balloons are magic, and she warns those who take a balloon to choose wisely.
Watching Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke made me feel like a child again. That is all I will say to not ruin the movie, but it is a must see. And your children will watch, captivated. I was a bit worried at first, as the children we were with ranged from ages 2 to 6, but they stayed entranced for the entire two hour period.
I can’t quite put a finger on how happy I felt after the movie. It was so nice to see such an all-star cast, of all ages, filled with such talent. Hope is not lost! Children can still use their imaginations and fly.
What is the one thing that is possibly missing from Lansbury’s role? Her iconic Murder She Wrote Wink or possibly a Beauty and the Beast song.
WEAR DISNEY – Simply wear Disney. How do you do that? It’s easy. It does not have to cost money. Wear bright colors. Wear red with polka dots. Feel like splurging? Buy an outfit from the Disney Store at least once. Trust me. You will enjoy wearing it. Is it cold? Try a Disney hat to protect your ears.
EAT DISNEY FOOD AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH – What is Disney food, you ask? It could be anything to “a spoonful of sugar” to a Mickey waffle! Get some Disney cookie cutters. They don’t need to be for cookies, they could be for sandwiches. Be creative! Make your meal fun!
SING A DISNEY SONG – Not on the subway, Not necessarily at work. Sing where you feel comfortable. Sing where it won’t get you ostracized or fired. Print out the lyrics if you have to. Just sing. You will feel better. This is one of my favorites: click here
DANCE LIKE A DISNEY PRINCE/PRINCESS – Dancing does not have to take place in public. Sometimes we dance to relieve stress, or even enjoy friendship. It just feels good. Disney Princess & Princesses know how to dance. Click here for an example: Just do it!
QUOTE DISNEY – Throw a Disney quote into a conversation once in a while. You do not have to actually say it is a quote. Just use the quote in a sentence. For example: 1) If you’re in charge of a project, say “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” 2) Did a friend mess up? Well tell them “If you weren’t you, we’d be a bit less “we”. 3) Is someone wondering what to do with their lives? Tell them: “venture outside your comfort zone, the rewards are worth it.”
He may look familiar – but who doesn’t these days!.
All of a sudden, he is the number one character at the box office! Ralph really “wrecks it” home. Video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz must risk it all by traveling to the World Wide Web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, “Sugar Rush.” Does he do it? And can he actually repair video games?
Do you remember the thrill of “THE NET” with Sandra Bullock losing her identity? This is that thrill here in this movie, but catered to kids. We don’t want to ruin the movie for your but there is a wonderful message to boot: Be yourself and follow your dream.
John C. Reilly: He is the voice of “Ralph”. And he couldn’t be the more perfect “voice”. A large, friendly, “cellophane” kind of guy. Who makes social mistakes often. We all know one of those. Reilly makes this connection perfectly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scWyxjNHYO0
Sarah Silverman: We have an actress here who is playing the heroine of this film, Vanellope Von Schweetz at the age of 9. So we are basically learning about Sarah Silverman and how she was at the age of 9. And guess what! We have a new Disney Princess. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXzS_rtfUpg Any questions?
Disney: Disney acknowledges its online presence and creates a Disney scene with the Disney princesses. staged as real people. It is NOT TO BE MISSED! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaNFGRbjBcA
We get to imagine the internet as a train station. The train station is a hub of activity. Literally. A myriad of internet denizens populate the land of Ralph and Vanellope. Luckly, we did not see the bathroom in detail.
Friendship: We get to watch a possibly underestimated display of friendship. This a true friendship story. They are best friends and Ralph does not want to change their status. He gets jealous. Who wouldn’t? But does friendship prevail? You let me know what you think. When we are with best friends, time flies by. So I do not know if I will be here for the answer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vwNcNOTVzY
How do you know that your child has Disney on the brain? Well, she draws a pair of Mickey Ears on your head for a school project. I am thankful that she has been to Disney so many times and sees me as a reflection of the fun times we always have.
Here are 5 things to avoid as you give thanks this year. And a few holiday tips along the way…
DON’T go to Disney unless you are ready to deal with crowds. Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest times of year at Disney. If you are willing, try pushing your vacation back a week. The week AFTER Thanksgiving is always nice, peaceful, and full of holiday spirit.
Were you hoping for Christmas to come early this year? Well, you’re in luck. DON’T expect to see Thanksgiving specific entertainment in any of the Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts. Do expect to see many Christmas Trees. And Christmas Decorations. And Christmas Parades. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party begins mid November and will not be held ON Thanksgiving Day but will be held Thanksgiving week
Do you have restaurant reservations on Thanksgiving? DON’T automatically expect a traditional Thanksgiving meal to be offered on the menu. You MUST do your research first, as only about a handful of restaurants end up offering Turkey as a meal.
DON’T expect to be able to walk into a restaurant without a reservation. You must make your reservations as close to 180 days (6 months) in advance as possible, or you will be ordering pizza or Chinese food to your room – not always a bad thing! If you can’t get a restaurant reservation, you can always grab a smoke turkey leg at the Frontierland Turkey Leg Car in the Magic Kingdom.
DON’T miss the Jungle Cruise Ride at the Magic Kingdom. It becomes the Jingle Cruise! And is full of yule tide cheer!
DON’T miss Black Friday shopping at Disney Springs. It begins at 8:00AM. Upon arrival, you will receive a special pamphlet detailing available promotions
Wherever you are – Do give thanks! Life is about what you make it.
BOMA Flavors of Africa is designed much like an African Marketplace (not like Tusker House, though, in terms of urban feel).
If you are lucky enough to be the first family to arrive at Boma for the evening, you will be treated to a live drum dance in your honor.
As far as dining, there is a buffet. You will find a kid friendly station with macaroni and cheese and chicken nuggets at the far right.
My take on this restaurant? It did not have as much of an African feel as some of the other Animal Kingdom Restaurants. If it weren’t for the food offerings, you could have been anywhere. The children’s selection was not as varied as some of the other Disney buffets. Let’s face it, there is a strong likelihood that children will not want to try all of what Boma has to offer (as delicious as it is). There should have been way more children’s options.
Here are a few flavorful foods that you may find at Boma:
Hibiscus is a flavor used in West African cooking and has a sweet and sour taste. Not only is it used in recipes for sweet tea(sometimes also called roselle or Jamaican Water), but the flower is also cooked in main dishes such as Hibiscus Flower Enchiladas.
Bread Pudding – Did you think Bread Pudding originated in New Orleans? Food historians trace the history of bread pudding to the early 11th and 12th centuries, as frugal cooks looked for ways to use stale, leftover bread instead of letting it go to waste. In 13th century England, bread pudding was known as “poor man’s pudding,” as it was a popular dish with the lower classes. Now, the pudding offered at Boma will amaze your tastebuds and leave you full for days.
Ghanian Ox-tail stew – don’t let the name scare you. Oxtail stew is the perfect one dish meal to keep you nutritiously satisfied – and an African tradition. Don’t want to try a whole bowl? Take a few tablespoons!
Soups: Harira Soup, South African Lobster Soup
Watermelon Rind Salad – probably my favorite of all. Perfect combination of sweet and tangy.
This is Disney, so you can be a princess anywhere, right? – well yes. But there are certain things that you may NOT want to do while dressed as a Disney Princess. Here are a few rules:
Do not jump in the adult or kiddie pool area while dressed as a Disney Princess. Not only do most of the Resort Pools have rules as far as what you can wear while in the pool, but a pool will certainly damage your princess dress. Disney Resort pools, especially in the kid areas, tend to have a lot of chlorine in the pool. Chlorine ruins clothing. Especially princess clothing. As a general rule: wear a bathing suit, goggles, and plenty of sunscreen. Definitely DON’t skip a frolic in the pool just because you want to keep your princess dress on.
Do Not go on Safari while dressed as a Disney Princess. Most of the safaris on Disney Property are sandy, dusty, and sometime muddy. You do not need your princess gown getting damaged in any way, shape or form. Unfortunately, Disney Cast Members will not hold up your princess train or long skirt for you, so plan accordingly. What should you bring on safari? Long socks, comfy shoes, sunscreen, plenty of water, and a camera.
Do not go on Splash Mountain, Kali River Rapids, or any other water ride while dressed as a Disney Princess (see #1 for advice on chlorinated water and princess attire). While you are always not Guaranteed to get covered in water on some of these rides, you must assume that you will be and prepare accordingly. Which also means that you must secure your phone, wallet, and anything else that you may not want getting wet. (Most of these rides have lockers to lock your personal items away. But, if you take off your princess dress and put it in a locker, please be sure that you have on a bathing suit underneath).
Are you an adult? If so, then you MUST NOT wear any princess dress on Disney Park Property. Disney has official rules on this. They do not want people confusing you with actual cast members. You may do something called Disney Bounding. That will be explained another day.
Are you frustrated yet? Are you wondering why you should go to Disney at all if there are so many reasons NOT to wear your princess dress in certain places? Do not call your friends to cancel your trip! Here are some great ways to have fun in your princess attire while on Disney Property:
Go to Akershus Castle, Cinderella’s Castle, and Be Our Guest Restaurant and dine with other royalty. At Be Our Guest Restaurant, you may not meet other princesses but you will surely have the chance to tame a wild beast.
All of the character meet and greets welcome guests dressed as princesses. You will surely be treated the way a princess deserves to be treated. But be careful: If you choose to dress as a Disney Princess and meet another Disney Prince or Princess, they will surely ask questions about your character.
Want to go to a regular restaurant dressed as a princess? Feel free! Also feel free go shopping. Everyone knows that princesses love to shop.
No-one will stop you from sleeping in your princess dress instead of your pajamas but lay down carefully so as not to wrinkle anything.
Do you want to go to the arcade dressed as a Disney Princess? Feel free. But bring a purse for $$ for the game room. Most of the arcades have a machine that requires Disney guests to put $$ on a game card.
I have seen Disney Princesses walk through Orlando Airport. You do not need extra identification to dress as a Disney Princess.
They go bump in the night and send shivers down your spine. Your nightmares. The stairs creak because a ghost is walking. Do these things keep you awake at night? Then you probably shouldn’t keep reading.
Something that feels so right has to be.. wrong, right? Or at least eerily spooky? Disney is so much fun that there have to be some skeletons hiding in the closet, or “secret underworld” that lies behind the scenes.
Ever wonder why the light is kept on in the apartment above the firehouse on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom? No, there are not firefighters in there. That is Walt Disney’s actual apartment. After Walt died, Disney employees tried to turn the light off but it always turns back on..
The Pirates of Caribbean Ride is constructed with real bones, I have mentioned this before. Do cast member still conveniently dispose bodies there? That’s for you to guess and for me to never find out.
Disney’s Main Street is haunted by more than just Walt Disney. A lady in white wonders the streets at all hours. She was killed on Main Street’s grounds before Disney built his empire. She has never been put to rest, and is constantly wandering the streets and checking storefronts for her children. Legend has it that she has been known to have guided actual lost children to the Baby Care Center. Would you trust her with your kids? Instead of telling my kids to look for “the lady in white” I usually make sure that we all decide on a designated area should they get lost.. but that’s just me.
Do you ever ride the monorail? One teenager tried to sneak into Disneyland in 1966 by climbing a fence, a fence that led right to the monorail tracks. He was then decapitated, run over by the same train that was supposed to take him to experience the joy of Disney. If you look closely, more than a few people have spotted him running alongside the train.
Several people report that a small boy stands at the exit of the Haunted Mansion, crying. When a guest or employee tries to speak to him, he ignores them as if they are not there. Well, he is not there. He is of another dimension. Possibly one of the ashes scattered around the Haunted Mansion. Click here to learn more.
Is your spine tingling yet? There are more real life accounts of employees who have passed in very gruesome ways, but I will save these for another day.
Mickey’s not so Scary Halloween Party has been going on since AUGUST (starts in August now every year), so this post is a little late, but I DON’T apologize!!
Here are five things NOT to DO at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party:
*DON’T look for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Part at Epcot, Hollywood Studios, or Animal Kingdom. The location of Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is the Magic Kingdom.* DON’T use up all of your energy at the parks during the day. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party happens after 7pm, at dusk. You will need all of your energy to enjoy the Not So Scary Events.
“It’s a Small World” is probably the most popular ride- traditionally- in the Magic Kingdom. It is family friendly, for all ages and sizes. But there are still some things you should never do on “It’s a Small World”.
Don’t put your hands in the water while riding the boat. This ride made its mark at the 1964 World’s Fair. I doubt you are riding in filtered water. You could be riding in basically the same water they had in 1964. That is water that is over forty years old! And dirty! Also, we have never heard of an alligator sighting, but be careful – and keep your hands in the boat!
Don’t worry about a Fast Pass (on non holidays). The line for this ride usually moves pretty quickly because there are so many boats. You do not have to run like crazy to get on this ride and beat the crowd. The one perk of a fast pass? Your name MAY show up somewhere along the ride. So do it for that reason only.
Don’t go on this ride looking for thrills and chills. As I said before, this is NOT a scary ride. You do not go fast or upside down. You go on here to relax. There is no screaming on this ride. Please do NOT scream. You will upset people.
Do NOT plan on learning a new language on this ride. Yes, seven languages and twenty five countries are represented on the journey. But you will be so busy looking at all of the beautiful scenery that I doubt you will pick up a language that quickly. If you want to try: English, Portuguese, German, French, Chinese, Spanish, and Italian! The ride can be found at five Disney Parks and Three Continents so go ahead and try.
Don’t be afraid to sing a long. Below are the lyrics to get you started
Finally, DO look up as the ride is beginning. People often hold up signs from the Pinocchio Haus
It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears. It’s a world of hopes and a world of fears.
There’s so much that we share
That it’s time we’re aware It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all It’s a small world after all It’s a small world after all
It’s a small, small world
There is just one moon and one golden sun And a smile means friendship to everyone.
Though the mountains divide And the oceans are wide It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all It’s a small world after all It’s a small world after all It’s a small, small world
If you are lucky enough, you will catch Jasmine and Aladdin together one day, after they get off of their own Magic Carpet Ride (in the Magic Kingdom) or Epcot’ World Showcase in Morocco (and please do try the food when you go there).
When you finally meet them, and hopefully there won’t be a long line to do it, here are some things you probably shouldn’t say.
DON”T ask Aladdin what it feels like to be a street rat. He might get insulted and have flashbacks to being called “a worthless street rat, with only fleas to mourn him”. Granted, being a “street rat” may not necessarily be a bad thing. “Street Rats” are usually comfortable on their own in any given city. A rat is also usually intelligent, agile, and knows how to survive on other people’s scraps. Does that sound like a bit like Aladdin to you?
DON’T ask Jasmine what it would take to win her. She will tell you she is not a PRIZE to be won – and she probably will stop talking to you.
3. DON’T ask if you can take a look at their magic lamp. You might rub it by mistake after all, and let Jafar out!
4. DON’T ASK Jasmine what it is like to have a pet tiger and if you can meet her tiger. That is, unless you really, truly want to meet a tiger. Just look at those teeth!
5. DON’T ask Aladdin if you can have one of his wishes. First, I believe he used them all up. But if he didn’t, do you really want to take on that headache? “Excuse me. Are you looking at me? Did you rub my lamp? Did you wake me up? Did you bring me here? & all of a sudden you’re gonna walk out on me? I don’t think so. Not right now! You’re getting your wishes, so SIT DOWN!”
6. DO Ask if you can go for a ride on their magic carpet, “CARPET”. It will be an experience of a lifetime. – And for those who want to try the Magic Carpet Ride, which is right next to Aladdin and Jasmine’s storefront meet and greet, go for it! it is amazing! and kid friendly!
